Reflection 1:

Meeting Them Where They Are

Being there for a student where they are is all about creating a judgment-free zone. I should be assessing someone for where they are right now in their life. Let it be me deep listening to a five-year-old talking about their dog or keeping my preconceived ideas from my frustrated sister. I will support a student wherever they are, even if they do not want to use my
advice, as long as they know I accept however their feelings might be. Everyone wants a place where they can feel a sense of belonging, and I will make it my mission that my presence gives that vibe.

For example, school always gave me a sense of belonging. I looked forward to going to all my classes. My past teachers always welcomed my presence in their classroom andappreciated my enthusiasm for new learning material. I loved to teach what my teachers taught me to my classmates. I was never the brightest student, but I still wanted to help where I could. Moreover, my classmates would reciprocate my kindness. I think so, anyway.

One time at recess, a girl from my class saw me sitting alone on a bench. She sat down next to me and asked what was wrong. Everything was fine. I was feeling lonely that day. I didn’t answer, and she said that sometimes she never knows what to say in the moment. She reassured me that it was all right if I was sad or angry. It was also alright if I did not want to voice my
feelings. At that moment, I just appreciated her company.

Thus, meeting them where they mean to me to create a comfortable environment. I will strive to listen, collect, and review one’s words or actions for the purpose of improving the situation for the individual.
